Biography

Born in Warsaw into a family of musicians, Jan Petryka first graduated as a cellist at the „Kunstuniversität Graz“, before he completed his studies in „Lied und Oratorium“(with Marjana Lipovsek and Rotraud Hansmann) at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna.

The collaboration with renowned ensembles like Arnold Schoenberg Chor (Erwin Ortner), Les Musiciens du Louvre (Marc Minkowski), Radiosymphonieorchester Wien, Bach Consort Wien, Wiener Akademie, L’Orfeo Barockorchester, La Chapelle Rhenane, Solamente Naturali, Collegium Vocale Luzern, Cinquecento Renaissance Vokal, Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona, Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg (Ivor Bolton), Bruckner Orchester Linz (Dennis Russell Davies), Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra (Uros Lajovic) strenghtened his position as an established european singer;

with numerous festival appearances, such as „Wiener Festwochen“, "Internationaal Liedfestival Zeist"(NL), "Festival Lavaux Classique(CH)" or „Lucerne Festival“ - where he sang the leading role in G.F.Haendel's „Belshazzar“, conducted by Marcus Creed.

Jan Petryka performed on numerous opera stages, as the „Wiener Staatsoper“ (W.Hiller: „Traumfresserchen“), „Teatro Communale di Ferrara“ (F.Bertoni: „L’Orfeo“) and „Theater an der Wien“(F.Schubert: „Lazarus“), Operá Lyon (W.A.Mozart: „Zauberflöte“ (Tamino; 1.Geharnischter), Franz Schreker: „Die Gezeichneten“), Warszawska Opera Kameralna (J.S.Bach: „Weihnachtsoratorium“).

His intense work on Lied and vocal chamber music led to cooperations with Robert Holl, Helmut Deutsch, Pierre Laurent Aimard, Roger Vignoles, Julius Drake and David Lutz.

2018 Jan Petryka has made his successful debut at the Prague National Theatre in B.Britten’s „Billy Budd“ as „The Novice“, performed „Don Ottavio“ in W.A.Mozart’s „Don Giovanni“ with the „Israel Chamber Orchestra“, and two opera productions at the „Styriarte“ Festival 2018 (L.v.Beethoven „Fidelio“ (Jaquino) and C.W.Gluck „Le Cinesi“).

Among many challenges for 2018/19 there are Petryka's debut appearances at the Schubertiade Schwarzenberg (e.g. with Sir András Schiff), as well as four major Europe/world tours with Thomas Hengelbrock and his Balthasar Neumann Ensemble/Choir, performing W.A.Mozart's „Requiem“, and J.S.Bach's „Magnificat“.
